Montecristo Cigars: Why is it Such a Classic Brand?

January 19, 2024

Montecristo Cigars have captivated cigar lovers since the Montecristo brand arrived on the scene in the 1930s. So, just what are Montecristo cigars, and why are they such classics? How much do they cost? Where can you find them? This brief guide has the answers and more, so get ready to dive into the world of Montecristo cigars.

Where Are Montecristo Cigars From?

Montecristo cigars are world-famous icons renowned for their exceptional construction, luxurious blends, and smoothness. The Montecristo brand has maintained this reputation since the brand was launched in Cuba in 1935 by Alonso Menendez. Menendez named his new cigars after Alexandre Dumas’ classic novel The Count of Monte Cristo, which was at the time one of the more popular books read aloud at the cigar factory while cigar rollers plied their trade.

By the 1950s, Montecristo cigars were internationally recognized as the ultimate connoisseur’s choice. However, Menendez and his business partners left Cuba in 1960 to escape the chaos of the Cuban Revolution. Fidel Castro’s regime seized the Montecristo operation in Cuba, subjecting the famous brand to Castro’s nationalization policies.

Undeterred, Menendez and company were determined to carry on the Montecristo legacy outside of Cuba. So they found their way to the Canary Islands, where Montecristo cigars briefly reemerged before finding a permanent home in the Dominican Republic. It was here the Montecristo brand was reborn, and Montecristo cigars were restored to their former glory as the classics we know today.

While Montecristo cigars have long been known for offering a smooth and mellow character, the current Montecristo lineup features a wide range of traditional and modern blends to suit all tastes. You’ll find these favorites and more at R & R Cigars’ The Cigar Mansion.

Montecristo Classic

Montecristo Classic cigars are just what you would expect. These lavishly delicious and silky smooth smokes offer the “classic” Dominican Montecristo character. Creamy and balanced from start to finish, Montecristo Classic cigars owe their refined nature to a blend of aged Dominican binder and filler leaves placed underneath an elegant Connecticut Shade wrapper. The Classic series is a great first entry into the Montecristo range or when the mood calls for mellow and satisfying.

Montecristo Platinum

Montecristo Platinum cigars are renowned for their richly textured taste and smooth character, highly sought after by cigar connoisseurs worldwide. A complex mixture of Dominican, Peruvian, and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos is blended with a Dominican binder and a Mexican San Andres Cubano wrapper for a beautifully structured medium-bodied smoke. Whether at home or your local cigar and whiskey bar, Montecristo Platinum cigars are at their best with whiskey, gin, rum, ale, or top-shelf cocktails.

Montecristo Espada

The Montecristo Espada series is unique to the Montecristo lineup as the cigars are the first Nicaraguan Puros crafted under the Montecristo brand. With a savory mixture of Nicaraguan tobaccos from Jalapa, Condega, and Ometepe, Montecristo Espada cigars treat the senses to a richer, fuller-bodied character than other Montecristo cigars. Sophisticated and complex, these favorites are great for pairing, from coffee to rum, ale, or bourbon.

Montecristo Private Batch

Montecristo Private Batch is a special project by Grupo de Maestros, an elite group of tobacco blenders and cigar makers with over 200 years of combined experience. The group utilizes tobaccos of exceptional vintages to create exquisite Montecristo Private Batch cigars. The cigars are available in small quantities and often sell out, yet each smoke is a rare and wonderful treat worth exploring, especially with top-shelf single malt whisky. R & R Cigars is proud to offer limited-production Montecristo Grupo de Maestros Private Batch cigars.

How Much Are Montecristo Cigars?

So, how much is a Montecristo cigar? It will depend on the cigar blend and size that you choose. Montecristo cigars are never mistaken for inexpensive cigars, featuring costs worthy of their legendary reputation for quality. Select any cigar from the Montecristo range, and you will enjoy an expertly crafted cigar that is smooth and rewarding.

While the various Montecristo blends range from moderate to luxurious in price, each delivers a gratifying experience that shows why Montecristo cigars retain their classic status. In addition, Montecristo cigars offer tremendous value compared to many of today’s pricier super premium cigars, which also lack the famous Montecristo allure. So, you will surely find the right Montecristo cigar to fit your tastes and budget.

What Makes Montecristo Cigars Unique?

The Montecristo brand has not come by international acclaim as one of the world’s most iconic cigars by accident. Instead, there is a pleasing, almost familiar character to a Montecristo cigar that has fascinated cigar smokers since the brand’s emergence. Exceptional construction, delicious flavor, complexity, and smoothness join with the brand’s lasting prestige to deliver the quintessential Montecristo experience.

So, what makes Montecristo cigars unique from other brands is a harmonious mix of quality and tradition that ensures a rewarding smoke like no other each and every time. Also, it doesn’t hurt that the classic brand is named after another classic, one of the most popular adventure tales of all time.
